The Age of Enlightenment
The french philosopher Charles de Montesquieu thought the the power should not be in the hand of one person. He suggested that the power should be separated (=geteilt) to make people safe from the power of a king. He called his system the „ separation of powers “ (=Gewaltenteilung). 1. the Legislature - the part that makes laws 2. the Executive - the part that carries out (=durchführen) / executes the laws 3. the Judicial branch - the Courts (=Gerichte) that decide if the law had been broken
