The Age of Enlightenment
The french philosopher Charles de Montesquieu thought the the power should not be in the
hand of one person. He suggested that the power should be separated (=geteilt) to make people
safe from the power of a king. He called his system the „
separation of powers
“ (=Gewaltenteilung).
